Roanoke and Lynchburg are both great places to raise a family. As the largest city in the area, Roanoke is sometimes referred to as the "Capital of the Blue Ridge." It’s also nicknamed "Star City" after the Mill Mountain Star, the city's most iconic landmark. Lynchburg, meanwhile, has been called the "City of Seven Hills" and is home to Liberty University.

For the best schools in Roanoke, consider moving into a neighborhood near the outer edges of the city, such as the Cloverdale, Bonsack, Clearbrook, Starkey, Bent Mountain, or Poages Mill. Closer to the city center, the Brambleton Avenue, Electric Road and Cave Spring neighborhoods are standouts. These same neighborhoods tend to be among the safest in Roanoke, as well.

Thanks to an abundance of universities, colleges, and employers, either Roanoke or Lynchburg can be a great choice for young professionals, as well. Wards Road and Candlers Mountain Road are located conveniently close to Liberty University, while Timberlake Road is packed with restaurants and other amenities. Boonsboro is among the nicest neighborhoods within city limits, but the outlying areas of Forest and Madison Heights are also popular.
